For more than 20 years, Taracea’s master craftsmen have been creating made-to-order furniture in mahogany, teak, cedar, and cypress. Woodworkers select, dry, and design each piece with skill and an attention to detail. Taracea furniture is unique, from its strikingly original designs which emphasize beauty and function, to its contributions to the environment.
Each piece has a deep and varied history. With every Taracea creation, master craftsmen pay homage to the 500 years of artistry that preceded them. From aging techniques to hand-applied finishes and decorative touches they suffuse each piece of furniture with centuries of tradition. All designs begin at the mill, and craftsmen truly bring out the peak expression of the wood. Many Mexican families work in the mill for generations. “Our work aims to honor the life of a tree and its worthy journey through the earth, turning it into an expressive work,” says Javier Suarez.
Woods are processed individually in a way that maximizes their value and uncovers their natural beauty. From a single tree, we may allocate sections for sculptures, slabs, veneers, or boards. Once milled, the woods arrive at their kilns where the drying process begins. Every gust of wind, fire, and storm creates tension in a tree’s trunk. Where natural cracks can occur. At the kiln, major splits are removed, and slabs are made stable. It can take as little as a year to several decades for a log to reach the factory floor. Many pieces wait years for the right project to come along.
Mexican sister company to Taracea is Rasttro. Rasttro brings handcrafted accessories and decorative products that utilize recovered wood and glass, each meticulously finished by master craftsmen to market. With wood as their prime working material, they developed production processes that maximize the use of wood.
Each production process is adapted to what makes more sense — with responsible use of materials and aesthetic beauty at the core of everything we do — which means adapting the end product to the materials available. This results not only in minimal waste and beautiful one of a kind pieces. Rasttro translates to traces, we try to leave a mark or trace of the raw organic material, and of its uniqueness, which is reaffirmed in the fact that we create mostly one of a kind pieces.
